So much about the high holidays seem counter-intuitive.

Why is Rosh Hashanah, the Day of Judgment, before Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement? Wouldn’t it make more sense to have Yom Kippur first, to be cleansed of our sins, and then Rosh Hashanah, when we would be ready for judgment?

Besides, how is atonement even possible? Would a traffic judge forgive a speeding violation - just because the defendant asked sincerely? How does this day wipe our sins clean?

What is really happing on these holy days, and how can we make their observance a truly meaningful experience?
